Have a Very Merry UnBirthday with an Alice in Wonderland, Mad Hatter Tea Party Birthday!I have always loved Alice in Wonderland, both the books and the classic Disney movie. My daughter and I decided it would be a lot of fun to host a Mad Hatter Tea Party for her birthday. It is a lot of fun to create a party from a theme that is not "in" or "popular" or "new." Parties like these make me stretch my creative muscles and I won't [more]

Mighty Mom Monday: I’m Still Here

#MightyMom healthy living and encouragment for all moms

You may have been wondering where I’ve been. Or maybe not, I have been writing, tweeting, so I didn’t disappear completely. Still, I haven’t written about being a Mighty Mom in awhile. Does that mean I have been doing super awesome and was just too mighty to stop and write about it? Hah! Nope. Just the opposite in fact. Ever since I went to Disney World I have not been exercising. I walked a million miles and ate to my hearts content. Seriously, Disney’s buffets are amazing. Then I came home and everyone got sick. So for the last few weeks we have been battling sickness, trying to catch up on life, and just being lazy.

Finally, I decided enough was enough and got off my butt and went for a run last weekend. It was my first in MONTHS. After bundling up, making a new playlists, and stretching (we all know what happens when you don’t!) I hit the trail. Despite having been the equivalent of a couch potato I was proud of what I accomplished. 2.07 miles is not too shabby! I ran again a few days later and kept up the momentum!

I can tell I was getting to that point of no return. That point when sitting on the couch doing nothing or eating whatever (organic of course but organic sweets will still make you fat!) becomes too comfortable. The bad cycle of self loathing starts and you hate what you’ve lost but get in a pit of not doing anything to change it.

Screw that! I refuse to succumb to that again and so I am picking up where I left out and going to the gym 2x a week. I am also running again so I can continue training for that eventual half marathon I want to run. It’s nice to see others completing goals and persevering. It really does help motivate me to see others not being bums. I hope you have friends you can look to when you need some extra encouragement!

Now that it’s getting cold outside everyone needs a little more oomph, gumption to get moving. My advice is to have others you work out with. It’s a lot harder to flake on a workout when other people are waiting for you.

So that’s my story. My truth. I haven’t been practicing what I preach err type but I will get back there. It’s just going to take some time and taking control of those thoughts that try to deter me from working out.

What is your cold weather tip?

Mighty Mom of October!

#MightyMom healthy living and encouragment for all moms

Every month I want to show off a Mighty Mom that I know. For my first Mighty Mom I reached out to my good friend Evelyn who is not only an awesome mother but she loves to run! Thank you Evelyn for inspiring me to get off my butt and run. I am so excited to have her share a little bit about herself to you all so you can be inspired by her too!

Hi Ashley thank you so much for choosing me for mighty mom of the month!!! I am honored!!! I am a 30 year old mother of 2.  My daughter is 12 and my son is 6. I work full time, go to school part time, and I LOVE to run!

Q: Did you always enjoy running? If not, what made you start?

I didn’t always enjoy running, matter of fact I disliked running in school.  I started running about 2 years ago.  I visited my doctor for a routine appointment and he told me; I was overweight and had high cholesterol.  I was crushed but knew that I had to turn my life around. I have a friend who always pushed for me to run and that day I decided to listen to her.  I googled everything about running and signed up for a race.  I became a little obsessed :)

Q: I know a lot of people run but it’s more for fun or because they have to! What made you become a serious runner?

I became a serious runner after my 3rd 5k.  I knew that I wanted to run longer distances but I need to build my endurance. I also saw how my body and mind were changing. I became stronger, and happier with myself. I knew running was becoming part of my life.  I also noticed my kids becoming more active! My son said he wanted to be a runner like me and my daughter decided to become more involved in sports.

Q: You told me you have completed a half marathon as well as put in a lot of miles just for fun and now you are training for a full marathon. Wow! So tell me, what inspires you to keep running/training? How do you stay motivated?

I am inspired to keep running and training by setting goals for myself. My first year of running I signed up for 12 5ks, 1 10 miler, 1 10k, and a half marathon.  I knew that if I wanted to complete all of that I had to train.  I feel that helps me stay focus.  Now that I am training for a full marathon I know I have to run otherwise I won’t make it! I like feeling accomplished!  I keep motivated by keeping my kids and goals in mind. I don’t want to disappoint them by quitting.  I know they look up to me and I want them to know that as long as they are happy they can pursue any goals they want.   I want to teach them that hard work pays off.  Of course there are days that I want to quit but I keep reminding myself why I am doing this.

Q: Time is something we are all short on especially as moms. How do you balance your home life, work, and training schedule?

I look at my schedule and pencil my runs in.  If I know I am not able to run one day I move it to where I can run.  I shuffle my schedule a lot when I am training to accommodate everything. For example Monday- Friday I work at 10 am till 7 pm, my daughter gets on the bus at 730 am and my son at 830 am. I run between 530-6 am.  If I have a day off during the week I run in the afternoon before the kids get home from school.  My school is online so I do homework between 9-10 pm after the kids go to bed.  It seems a lot but honestly running is such therapy for me I need it in my life!

Now lets talk about running

Mighty Mom of October

Evelyn at her first half marathon!

Q: What are your must have training essentials?

My training essentials are: good music, good shoes, GU, and my fuel belt.

Q: What advice do you have for avoiding running related injuries?

I would say to prevent injury my number one thing is to stretch and foam roll after a run. I also say posture is very important.  I tend to watch my posture while running , if your posture if off it can cause shin splints.

Q: What is something you wish someone had told you when you started running?

The one thing I wish I knew it would be that shoes are very very very important.  I had no idea that shoes can make a difference.  I chose my first pair just by walking down the aisle of  a store and it was not a wise choice.  They didn’t give me enough support and my knees would hurt every time I wore them!  I finally realized that I should be measure for shoes and went to the running store.  Turns out the shoes I had picked were not the right ones at all! No wonder I was having problems!

Q: As you know I have started a Mighty Mom Monday weekly post where I share my healthy living, fitness journey and encourage others to do the same. What is your Mightiest Mom Moment?

My mightiest Mom moment is when my friend emailed me and asked me to help her run! I felt so blessed to be able to help others out! She had been struggling with self esteem and health issues that she finally hit her breaking point.  She asked me for advice and I helped her get started.  Now she can’t imagine her life without running!

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

I just wanted to tell other moms out there that I know it can be difficult to get started but it is so rewarding at the end of the journey.  A lifestyle change can be scary but there is a lot of help out there to get you through it!

Mighty Mom Monday Pushing On

#MightyMom healthy living and encouragment for all moms

Happy Monday Mighty Moms! I have been on the go for the past several days, traveling to my neighbor state of Maryland for the Natural Products Expo, hanging out a vineyard, and helping a friend do a little healthy food shopping. I feel like today, I have just been trying to be in my own space and zen out. Ok not really zen considering I have a pile of “to-dos” that are glaring at me.

Remember the bruised rib issue from last week? Thankfully it seems to be healing. I did go to Zumba, modifying moves as needed and I even ran for a bit, until I couldn’t stand it anymore. Some people thought I was a little crazy to be pushing myself but I believe that the point is to do something. Get off the couch and just do something. Tonight I will be headed back to Zumba and after testing out some moves that were impossible last week, I think I can handle it. At least I will be able to do a little twisting!

But I feel blah, my period started, I’m too tired. Those are mental excuses. Your brain will give out before your body does. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t feel better after they workout out. I’m not saying go running on a broken leg. All I’m saying is: Don’t hurt yourself, know your limitations, change things up as needed, and do what you can. That’s what pushing on Mighty Mom style looks like!

I’m excited to be starting a new feature: Mighty Mom of the Month. In October (which oh my goodness is tomorrow?!) you will meet a friend of mine who inspires me daily with her commitment to her family and her health. She is definitely a Mighty Mom. If you have a story to tell or know a mom that does I would love to hear it and share it with my readers!

Do you have a Mighty Mom Moment from the past week to share? Need some encouragement? Let me know in the comments. Have a great week!

Mighty Mom Monday Bruised but Pushing Through

#MightyMom healthy living and encouragment for all moms

Happy Monday Mighty Moms! Last week I wrote about getting back into the groove despite not feeling 100%. I pushed through and worked out 2x last week. Then on Saturday I started noticing a throbbing pain in my chest.

Now don’t go all WebMD on me, I’m not dying and the pain is on the right side not the left! After talking to some doctor friends of mine, we are almost 100% positive I have bruised a rib. Do I have some awesome story to go along with that injury? Nope. I coughed myself into this mess. I mean seriously, when did I become so old that coughing makes me hurt myself.

For those who don’t know, there is nothing you can really do to make a bruised rib go away. I am alternating ice and heat, while gritting my teeth and dealing with it. My plans are still to go to Zumba tonight and running tomorrow. No, I’m not crazy, actually it hurts regardless of what I’m doing so I might as well get some exercise!

At the end of this week, I will be attending the Natural Product Expo- Expo East for the first time. I am excited to learn about more organic companies and see what products will be debuting soon. Don’t worry I promise to fill everyone in on all the good stuff I see and experience!

Have you ever just felt like weight wise blegh? Lately, that’s me I just feel blah and that I’m gaining weight although I know that’s not really happening. I just feel chubby sometimes yah know? What do you do when you feel fat?

Can I encourage you in something? Leave a comment I would love to chat with you! Also #MightyMom to keep the convo going on Twitter!

Mighty Mom Monday- Down But Not Out

#MightyMom healthy living and encouragment for all moms

If coughing until your abs hurt counted as core exercise or cheering on your favorite football team to victory was cardio then this week would have been a success. Unfortunately, I don’t think they count and that means I didn’t have such a mighty week.

Thanks to this lovely laryngitis which turned into a head cold I was down for the week. But not completely out. I did managed to make it to the gym Monday night for Zumba, paid for it afterwards of course. At least I went. The rest of the week I just tried to breathe through my nose and not cough up a lung. Success rate: about 50% if I’m being forgiving. So yeah it’s been a rough week and I wanted to go for a run but wasn’t sure my lungs could stand it.

Ehh it happens.

What’s a mighty mom to do? Shake it off and keep at it. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming… It’s a new week and although not 100% I’m better enough to get back to my regular workout schedule. I just wish it wasn’t so hard to force yourself back into a routine. I feel like that is some sort of conspiracy thought up by evil skinny people. It could happen. Anyways, yes it will be hard, it will suck, and I’m sure I will be sore.

So this week I’m asking for some motivating, encouraging words from you, my most awesome readers. What about you? What can I do to help you with your healthy living goals?
