What traits do you look for in a hero/heroine? Do they have the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Or do they have a flying horse that carries them into battle? While I love a good comic book character, I want my children to also look up to real life people. A great way to teach children about history makers and changers is with these new books from National Geographic Kids: The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines. Read on to learn more about these books and enter for a chance to win a set of your own in my National Geographic Kids book giveaway!
Both books highlight the true stories of superstars, superheroes, war heroes, rebels, world leaders, peacemakers, action heroes, sport legends, and more gutsy gals and daring dudes. The Book of Heroines highlights heroes such as Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Misty Copeland, Tina Fey, and Emma Watson. The Book of Heroes highlights heroes like Galileo, Sitting Bull, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Hawking.
Both of my children dove right into these books. My daughter is a warrior for what is right and what is kind. When she learned that The Book of Heroines would talk about other awesome women who did (or are doing) the same thing she couldn’t wait to read it. She has now read it cover to cover 10 times.
Go ahead and ask her about some of her favorites. She can proudly tell you all about them and find the exact pages they are on in the book!
My son was fascinated to find pictures of fire fighters, sport heroes, and animals. He wanted me and his sister to sit down and read all about them with him, excitedly pointing out names he recognized or cool pictures.
In both books I found some of my own personal heroes and heroines listed. People like Steve Irwin who was a hero of conservation and animals. Or Mulan who fought for her country, kicking tail like the tough woman that she was. I thought it was nice to also see animal heroes, even some of our favorite literary stars like Harry Potter and Princess, err General Leia Organa. They might not be real but they surely inspire generations of heroes and heroines to fight the good fight and stand up for truth and justice.
Although the word hero has many meanings, each person highlighted in these books share seven qualities:
Both The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines retail for $14.99 each and are great gift books for children ages 8-12. Buy them wherever books are sold, including Barnes & Noble, Books-a-million, the National Geographic Store , and Amazon (Heroes and Heroines)

Teaching kids about money is an important part of my job as a parent. One day, these children will be adults and out in the world. They need to know how money works. Honestly, I have seen one too many adults who do not understand this concept. I do not want my children buried under debt. Living within their means and being able to enjoy fun things like traveling is what I want for them. But how can we as parents explain and instruct them in the right way and wrong ways to treat money?
Luckily, we are not alone. Sunny Lee, author of “Is Your Child a Money Master or a Money Monster?” has developed a proven system to teach children all about money. Where it comes from, saving, earning interest, and hidden costs. Also how saving a little bit every day helps us to reach our goals.
She approaches the issue of money by breaking it down in easy to understand concepts. Each of the 7 habits are written about in a way that not only will children gain knowledge and wisdom concerning money but adults will as well. I like that Sunny includes images and examples of what she uses for her boys within the chapters. You can find some of the charts as downloads on her site.

I like these question segments. They are a great way to have a conversation with your children and to gauge just what they are learning through the process.

Get ready for non stop action, spy missions, steal attacks, and a lot of laughs in James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein’s book: Treasure Hunters Peril at the Top of the World! The Kidd family is back and ready to tackle their latest adventure. When a set of priceless paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt go missing the Kidd family is on the case.
This is the fourth book in the Treasure Hunters series. And the first one we have read. I really enjoyed the book as did the kids. I think this book is perfect for independent reading as well as reading aloud. Throughout the book there are illustrations which help children visualize what they are reading. My daughter devoured this book within a day! Her brother is not quite there yet in being able to read a big chapter book alone. But that is okay, because we had some great laughs and snuggles reading Treasure Hunters together as a family.
The Kidd family has never backed down from a treasure hunt!
In their newest adventure, the Kidd family searches for lost treasure in the frosty Arctic!
When the biggest heist in history takes place in Moscow, the Kidds rush in to save the day- but instead, they’re accused of being the thieves themselves. Time is running out to find the stolen treasure, and they’re this close to being thrown into a Russian prison for a crime they didn’t commit! Will the Kidd family find the golden goods in the middle of the frigid Arctic? An even more important- will they make it out of the icy wasteland alive?

Get ready for a classic tale with a rocking twist. The new Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood App, available in the App Store, features the story we all know narrated by the one and only Alice Cooper! The app has been voted Best New App and Editor’s Pick. I am not surprised. This musical storybook is great for the whole family to enjoy together.
While the aspects of the traditional Russian message remains the same, this Peter and the Wolf has been brought into our modern world. Peter has traveled to Hollywood to meet his hippie grandfather, a gardner for a celebrity. I don’t think Peter knows quite what to make of his grandfather, but we think he is hilarious!
On Peter’s birthday, he discovers that a wolf has escaped from the local Zoo. He thinks to himself if he could catch it he would be a hero and then maybe he would finally have some friends. Using his knowhow, new binoculars, and turning a blind ear to his grandfather’s advice, Peter races to capture the wolf before it is too late!
Will it work out for our dear Peter? You’ll have to download the app to find out!
The story is easy for the kids to navigate, with a blinking forward button to know when to turn the page.
My son’s favorite part was building the robot and my daughter liked designing a constellation. Me? The story has always been a favorite because of the music. I really enjoyed the new story coupled with the amazing orchestrations.
Throughout the story, the kids are not only listening and watching but also participating. Both of my kids get excited when digital books have this feature. Especially my son. He loves to help the story progress and discover new things a long the way.
We had a lot of giggles, especially with the hippie grandfather! Dude!
Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood is a beautifully made digital storybook. The music, colors, dimensions, and characters draw the reader in for a whole lot of fun! This app goes beyond just telling a story and includes 8 games, an educational section, plus a place that shows how the app was made including the models, animations, and recordings.
The whole family will love Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood!
