On May 4th, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are going to battle to save our planet, and all the realms from the tyranny of Thanos. Last week we focused on everything you need to know before Infinity War and outlined the MCU, movies only, in theatrical release order. If you are daring enough to dive deeper into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before May, I’m sharing my complete guide to the MCU timeline.
Each week to celebrate #MarvelMondays, my geeky friend, Jana of Merlot Mommy, and I will be bringing you fun Marvel posts leading up to the Infinity War premiere. You can read her MCU timeline breakdown here. Last week we shared Everything You Need to Know Before Infinity War. Make sure to read her post too. And, join us on Twitter every Monday @ThatAshleyErin and @MerlotMommy!
Okay, are you ready to go deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Alright then, Nerds Assemble!
Spider-Man: Homecoming, does it break the timeline?
The 8 years snafu. It has been hotly debated on Reddit, ScreenRant, and other sites. I’m choosing to overlook that bit and enjoy Spider-Man: Homecoming as a fun film that shows us Peter’s perspective, and cell phone footage, of Civil War and life after a big superhero fight. High School is the worse!
Stark Expo 2018- Could it be just an Easter Egg or does it mean that Spider-Man: Homecoming’s place in the timeline is exactly where we think/want/need it to be? I’m going the latter. It makes for less of a headache on my end. I don’t know how the 8 years thing was left in the movie when it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but either it was a mistake or we will find out down the line we were all wrong and Marvel was planning something big. Either way, I’m good.
Although we aren’t given an exact time for Thor, we do know that this happens after Ultron and during the events of Civil War. How much time does Thor spend exploring the realms? We don’t know for sure, but I put it in the timeline to reflect it’s happening in modern day.
This is another one I believe happens in modern day. How long did it really take Strange to learn all the secrets of the Kamar-Taj offered? Stephen has an eidetic memory and time might pass differently in the home of the Ancient One. So the explanation it only took him several months checks out in my opinion.
The original Thor and Darryl shorts were to explain Thor’s absence from Captain America: Civil War. And I don’t care if they aren’t technically canon anymore, I love them. If you haven’t watched them, do it now. When Thor:Ragnarok comes to Blu-Ray there will be all new Team Thor short. This time The Grandmaster himself, Jeff Goldblum will be hanging out with Darryl. I wonder if he makes a better roomie than Thor?
The Avengers Prelude: Fury’s Big Week
I won’t go into all the comics (maybe another day!) but I thought this one deserved a mention. Fury’s Big Week makes connections between the Phase One films, retelling the events from the perspective of S.H.I.E.L.D. We see just how Fury and the gang end up in some seriously interesting places as they seek out the perspective heroes to join The Avengers.
Originally set to be a movie, Inhumans was turned into a TV show and launched in 2017. The idea of Inhumans was first introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Daisy Johnson, aka Quake. Although she was not carried over into the show, other elements were. The alien writing and the blue Terrine crystals originated on AoS.
This show lives in the same world as our Avengers, but right now these kids aren’t as concerned with Captain America and Iron Man. They are dealing with enough things in their own lives to keep them occupied. No crossovers are planned as of right now.
Marvel’s The Punisher
Occurring after Season 2o of Daredevil, The Punisher isn’t super connected right now in the MCU. This show is definitely grittier than others and proves that Marvel is willing to go into the darker corners of their character base.
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger
Aside from The Roxxon Corp seen in the trailer, which has ties all the way back to Agent Carter, it remains to be seen how it will tie into the MCU as a whole. As of now they are not planning for crossovers but there will be nods to the MCU.
What are you going to do while you wait for Avengers Infinity War? I think I’m going to watch some of my favorite Marvel TV shows again and definitely Team Thor shorts!
Infinity War is in theaters May 4th 2018!

Before we get started, I hope you have gotten your tickets to Black Panther! We got ours for opening weekend, IMAX 3D, and now all I need to do is get my outfit ready. Yes, I am that girl who shows up to movie screenings representing the film. Don’t ask how many Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel clothes I own. You don’t want to know! Black Panther is in theaters February 16th, but for now, come meet the Warriors of Wakanda and learn more about T’Challa in these all new Black Panther featurettes!
“Warriors of Wakanda”
The Dora Milaje are highly-skilled warriors, who are the female bodyguards of T’Challa. They represent the best of the best of each tribe in Wakanda. After watching the above featurette, you can see how fierce these women are. My daughter and I are excited to see them on the big screen, kicking butt and taking names!
“Good to Be King”
Unlike other superheroes, aside maybe from Thor, T’Challa has the added responsibility of running a country, leading his people as their King. He must find that balance, decide what kind of king he wants to be, and protect his home from men like Killmonger who wish it harm.
Long Live The King. Black Panther is in theaters February 16, 2018!
In case you couldn’t tell, I’m super excited for Avengers Infinity War! Ever since Iron Man debuted in 2008, we have all been on some epic adventures with the Avengers. The highs and the lows, the foreboding presence of Thanos hanging out in the peripheral, have all been leading up to this moment.
To celebrate this momentous occasion in our fandom, each week my geeky friend, Jana of Merlot Mommy, and I will be bringing you fun Marvel posts leading up to Infinity War. (Read her post here) I’m psyched to kick-off Marvel Mondays with Everything You Need to Know Before Avengers Infinity War!
The only stone we haven’t seen so far is the Soul Stone. And based on my nerdy calculations, I am betting it will be in Black Panther. Which makes sense when we see Cap, Bucky, Black Panther, Black Widow, Hulk, Falcon, and War Machine heading into battle in this clip. Thanos wants/needs that stone.
Color: Blue, contained inside the Tesseract
Loki pocketed the Tesseract in Thor Ragnarok. He owes it to Thanos based on their deals in the first Avengers film. Looks like he pays up. In the trailer, Thanos has come to collect and Loki hands it over.
Color: Yellow, originally inside Loki’s scepter
Vision has the mind stone in his forehead
Color: Red, contained in the Aether
Last seen with Tivan the Collector on Knowhere
Color: Purple, contained inside the Orb
Last seen inside the vault of Nova Corps on Xandar
Color: Green, contained inside the Eye of Agamotto
Currently with Doctor Strange
The Soul Stone hasn’t made it’s debut in the MCU yet, but my guess is we will see it in Black Panther.
In the trailer for Infinity War, Thanos is wearing the gauntlet (the real one, not the fake one from Odin’s vault) looking pretty pleased with himself. Two stones down, three to go.
The third one might also find it’s way to his Gauntlet. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it detail in the trailer, Vision is being attacked by someone using Loki’s scepter. That’s not the part you might have missed, it’s the foot of the villain doing the attack. Based on the comics and the D23 reveal, it looks to me like Corvus Glave (more on him below) is doing the damage to Vision, while Proxima Midnight looks on.
Thanos and The Black Order
Thanos has been biding his time. He wasn’t foolish about his approach to this fight. By now he has taken the measure of each hero and planned accordingly. Thanos knows their strengths and weaknesses. And if you thought he might be defeated easily, think again.
In Mythology Thanos (Thanatos) is the god of Death. If that isn’t enough to give you pause, not sure what is. In the comics Thanos has superhuman strength, stamina, durability, is a super genius, accomplished fighter, and can project large amounts of cosmic energy. Basically, he’s not your garden variety villain so, run!
At D23 we got our first glimpse at The Black Order (Children of Thanos). Ebony Maw, Cull Obsidian, Corvus Glave, and Proxima Midnight are a lethal team of supervillians. As I said above, I think it is Corvus Glave using the scepter on Vision and in another blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Proxima Midnight is throwing her spear-like weapon at Captain America.
Where Are Our Heroes Now?
Captain America and his team are on the run. No longer Avengers in the eyes of the government they are living under the radar. Rocking the bearded look, Cap looks more like his Nomad persona than the clean shaven Steve Rogers we have seen so far. Bucky was left frozen in Wakanda, but now he is back in action and ready to fight. The genius doctors must have finally cured him of the Winter Soldier triggers. Black Widow turned on Iron Man and allowed Cap and Bucky to escape. Her blonde hair is part of her assume a new identity plan.
At the end of Ragnarok, Thor and Loki are watching as a huge ship dwarfs The Commodore. That would be The Sanctuary, a.k.a. Thanos’ ship hovering in front of them. Thor ends up on the Milano with the Guardians, Hulk has fallen back to Earth and into the presence of Doctor Strange and Wong, and Loki is stepping over dead bodies to deliver the Tesseract to Thanos. Not good.
The Guardians have been hanging out somewhere in the galaxy. Probably saving it. Again. Infinity War takes place 4 years after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which explains why Groot is a teenager. It is also important to remember, Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos and Nebula, out there somewhere, is his actual daughter. Both hate him. This battle is going to be personal.
Spider-Man is back at school, living the life of a teenager. But after his Spidey Senses tingle, he decides maybe he does need that Iron Spider Suit after all.
Tony is in New York with Strange, Wong, and Banner. Looking closely, he is holding the burner phone that Cap sent him. I would say that a Mad Titan making landfall on Earth is a situation where he is going to need all the help he can get.
Wherever they are, we are going to need every single hero we’ve got if Earth has any chance of surviving.
Which order should you watch the Marvel movies?
I get asked this a lot. With so many movies and TV shows, it can be hard to know where to start if you aren’t already majorly invested like I am. To keep you from getting too overwhelmed, I’m going to focus on the movies and where you can find them to watch.
