What traits do you look for in a hero/heroine? Do they have the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Or do they have a flying horse that carries them into battle? While I love a good comic book character, I want my children to also look up to real life people. A great way to teach children about history makers and changers is with these new books from National Geographic Kids: The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines. Read on to learn more about these books and enter for a chance to win a set of your own in my National Geographic Kids book giveaway!
Both books highlight the true stories of superstars, superheroes, war heroes, rebels, world leaders, peacemakers, action heroes, sport legends, and more gutsy gals and daring dudes. The Book of Heroines highlights heroes such as Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Misty Copeland, Tina Fey, and Emma Watson. The Book of Heroes highlights heroes like Galileo, Sitting Bull, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Hawking.
Both of my children dove right into these books. My daughter is a warrior for what is right and what is kind. When she learned that The Book of Heroines would talk about other awesome women who did (or are doing) the same thing she couldn’t wait to read it. She has now read it cover to cover 10 times.
Go ahead and ask her about some of her favorites. She can proudly tell you all about them and find the exact pages they are on in the book!
My son was fascinated to find pictures of fire fighters, sport heroes, and animals. He wanted me and his sister to sit down and read all about them with him, excitedly pointing out names he recognized or cool pictures.
In both books I found some of my own personal heroes and heroines listed. People like Steve Irwin who was a hero of conservation and animals. Or Mulan who fought for her country, kicking tail like the tough woman that she was. I thought it was nice to also see animal heroes, even some of our favorite literary stars like Harry Potter and Princess, err General Leia Organa. They might not be real but they surely inspire generations of heroes and heroines to fight the good fight and stand up for truth and justice.
Although the word hero has many meanings, each person highlighted in these books share seven qualities:
- Heroes are courageous
- Heroes do the right thing
- Heroes have compassion
- Heroes are competent
- Heroes are inspiring
- Heroes never quit
- Heroes leap to action

Amy has a seemingly perfect life, until it all comes crashing to a halt. She is about to snap. Amy joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to drop the mom guilt, stop keeping up with Joneses, and have some un-mom-like fun! Of course not everyone is a fan of being unconventional, and they have a big run in the the Queen Bee of the PTA and her over-the-top clique of moms.
Bad Moms is a hilarious comedy that every not-so-perfect mom will appreciate. My friends and I laughed until we cried throughout this movie. But aside from the laughter, this movie teaches us all something about being a mom. We don’t have to be an angel, make everything from scratch, or be everything to everyone. We just have to love our children, be there for them, and be the best mom that we can be. I don’t need to be like you and you don’t need to be like me. What a relief!
Bad Moms is now available to own on Digital HD with UltraViolet™ and on Blu Ray and DVD November 1st.
Bonus Features available on all versions:
- Deleted Scenes
- Gag Reel
- Cast & Moms Interviews: A collection of intimate moments between the leading cast including Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith and Annie Mumolo and their moms.
Ready to have a #BadMomsNightIn?
- Group text your mom friends who could all use a night off. So all of them.
- Plan a night that works for everyone. Use your best mom-is-fed-up voice if you have to on the dads.
- Everyone bring something. Try to balance out the food to drink ratios. You know your kids will not let you sleep off that headache in the morning.
- The rule at my house is comfy clothes. You do not need a ballgown on for this party.
- Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fact you don’t have to take anyone potty.
