Do your kids go crazy over STEM activities? Mine do. Now that school is out I have been looking for STEM Summer fun to do at home. Thanks to Best Buy I didn’t have to look very far. Best Buy carries products from basic learning games to advanced toys designed to stimulate a child’s mind in the STEM areas, helping them develop logic and problem solving skills. One of those products is the Jimu Robot Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit.
This kit allows kids to create a custom-built robot complete with moving arms and legs! Super cool! The kids couldn’t wait to get building. Together, with a little help from Mommy and Daddy, they put together their Buzzbot and named him Kionno.
Start to finish the project took about a hour or so. The Jimu App made it easy to put together our Buzzbot. The app has detailed building instructions, allowing you to rotate the image to really get a feel for where pieces need to be placed.
The pieces snap together by hand, no tools required. The pieces are easy for children and adults to snap into place. A tool is also included just incase a piece gets stuck!
It is also a great activity to work on as a family.
Within the Jimu Robot App, your child can choose from preprogrammed movements or they can create their own sequences to make Buzzbot or Muttbot the coolest Robot on the block!
This adorable little robot and all Jimu Robots are environmentally friendly, durable, and safe for children.
Once it was put all together it was time to see what this Robot could do!
I can’t say that the Jimu Robot Buzzbot and Muttbot Kit will cure sibling bickering this Summer, but ours didn’t even disagree about who could go first. They took turns, played together, and shared the robot without any ah encouragment from their Dad and I.

What traits do you look for in a hero/heroine? Do they have the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Or do they have a flying horse that carries them into battle? While I love a good comic book character, I want my children to also look up to real life people. A great way to teach children about history makers and changers is with these new books from National Geographic Kids: The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines. Read on to learn more about these books and enter for a chance to win a set of your own in my National Geographic Kids book giveaway!
Both books highlight the true stories of superstars, superheroes, war heroes, rebels, world leaders, peacemakers, action heroes, sport legends, and more gutsy gals and daring dudes. The Book of Heroines highlights heroes such as Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Misty Copeland, Tina Fey, and Emma Watson. The Book of Heroes highlights heroes like Galileo, Sitting Bull, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Hawking.
Both of my children dove right into these books. My daughter is a warrior for what is right and what is kind. When she learned that The Book of Heroines would talk about other awesome women who did (or are doing) the same thing she couldn’t wait to read it. She has now read it cover to cover 10 times.
Go ahead and ask her about some of her favorites. She can proudly tell you all about them and find the exact pages they are on in the book!
My son was fascinated to find pictures of fire fighters, sport heroes, and animals. He wanted me and his sister to sit down and read all about them with him, excitedly pointing out names he recognized or cool pictures.
In both books I found some of my own personal heroes and heroines listed. People like Steve Irwin who was a hero of conservation and animals. Or Mulan who fought for her country, kicking tail like the tough woman that she was. I thought it was nice to also see animal heroes, even some of our favorite literary stars like Harry Potter and Princess, err General Leia Organa. They might not be real but they surely inspire generations of heroes and heroines to fight the good fight and stand up for truth and justice.
Although the word hero has many meanings, each person highlighted in these books share seven qualities:
- Heroes are courageous
- Heroes do the right thing
- Heroes have compassion
- Heroes are competent
- Heroes are inspiring
- Heroes never quit
- Heroes leap to action

The kids will have fun and be school ready with LeapFrog LeapStart. This all new educational system from LeapFrog is such blast! Both of the kids couldn’t wait for me to get this open and set up. Lucky for me it took no time at all to get it ready for them. Then the only tough choice they had to make was which book to start with.
LeapStart is made to get kids excited about everything from creative thinking to STEM with fun replayable activities that teach life and school skills. The goal is to help kids build tomorrow’s skills today, so they will be ready for school.
The LeapStart is great for quiet time, family time, and road trips. With all the different activities and challenges, the kids would spend all day on the LeapStart if I let them. What if my kid is older than 7? My 10 year had fun helping her brother and playing on her own. If your child is an avid learner and explorer I think they will enjoy the LeapFrog LeapStart as much as my kids.
Setup is easy. Just pop in 2 AA batteries and connect it to your LeapFrog account. Download the audio content for each book you purchase for your LeapStart and within a few minutes you are ready to learn. There are books available in four different learning levels and each book includes over 30 activities. For more info about the LeapStart and to see all the books available, visit LeapFrog.com. I also like that the LeapStart has a spot on the back to hold a book when not in use.

From a teacher stand point, I think the LeapStart is a great way to get your little ones comfortable with school skills and give them a head start for the school year. By making the learning fun, LeapFrog is making it easy for parents to prepare their kids for preschool, Kindergarten, and first grade without putting pressure on the kids.
As a mom, I have always trusted LeapFrog. It is a wonderful company that always brings the awesome alongside the education. My kids enjoy their time engaging with the LeapStart books and I can sit back knowing they will retain this information for later use during the school year.
And the kids? Well here is what they had to say: So cool! And did you see this game in the Space book? Rawr I’m a leopard!

To get children excited to learn can be a daunting task for teachers and parents. For me as a teacher it was always rewarding when I saw my students enjoying the learning process. I of course tried to be a fun teacher but even I couldn’t make some subjects fun. That is probably one of the first reasons I fell in love with the LeapFrog brand. I saw how it made learning an adventure for the kids, they didn’t even realize it was teaching them something! When I became a mother, I knew LeapFrog was going to be a must have in the house. It started with the magnetic farm letters and has grown! And now, I am thrilled to be a part of the new LeapFrog Mom Squad!
My family agrees, learning is fun with the LeapFrog Word Whammer! Kiddos will have a blast spinning, pushing, and twisting handles to identify letters and build words! This toy features 3 games and 5 learning levels that adapt as your children play with it. Push the handle to blast a rocket into letters to spell more than 100 words. Take a spin on the tea cups, listening for a letter sound, then twist the handle fast to spin the teacup into the letter that makes that sound. Hop in the bumper cars to match the upper and lowercase letters. Then enjoy a parade with your LeapFrog pets!
When my little man comes home from school he knows first he needs to do his reading homework then he is free to play. Ever since we opened up the Word Whammer it is all he wants to do after school. It is the first toy he goes for, and he plays with it until mean old Mommy tells him it’s time for a break!
At school he is learning to read, memorizing sight words, and sounding out basic vocabulary words. The Word Whammer helps to reinforce his letter recognition, sounds, and expand his reading vocabulary. He loves getting his tickets at the end of the game to use in the claw machine. At the claw machine you pick out a prize for one of your LeapFrog Word Whammer pets. Then all the animals march in the parade. It is super cute!
Although this is a toy designed for younger kids, even your older ones will enjoy it. My daughter who can read chapter books, enjoys playing on the Word Whammer she loves the pets! I like it too, it is just a lot fun. But don’t take my word for it. Watch my little guy play!
