I screened Black Panther last night (it opens in theaters Friday) and let me tell you, it more than lives up to the hype. It was nothing like we have seen in the MCU so far. The story-telling, the setting, and the characters are amazing. The stand-outs to me were the women. So I’m sharing all about the women of Wakanda along with my no spoiler review, is it for the kids, and post credit scene info!
“Surround yourself with people you trust”
T’Challa has returned home to Wakanda and is sworn in as the new king. Life is far from easy. He must figure out what kind of king he wants to be. He loves his father but that doesn’t mean he can’t forge his own path and lead Wakanda in a new direction.
Not only does T’Challa do some soul searching in this film for his new mantle as both a king of a nation and a superhero, he must deal with the consequences of the actions of others. When Erik Killmonger shows up in Wakanda, everything begins to collide. T’Challa, with the help of his sister, Shuri, the Dora Milage, Nakia, and an unlikely ally, fights to save not only Wakanda but the rest of the world as well. It’s good practice for him. After all, he will be joining the Avengers in saving the world from an even bigger threat in Infinity War.
I can sum up my viewing experience with this: If you don’t leave wanting to yell Wakanda Forever I won’t believe you actually saw the movie.
The Women of Wakanda
The guys of Wakanda are cool and all, and sure they are great fighters but to me they pale in comparison to the Dora Milage and the other ladies. The women of Wakanda are smart, strong, and fierce. I think they stole the movie away from the guys. Sorry T’Challa.
We first met Okoye in Civil War when she showed up like a boss. And she is. She’s the general of the Dora Milaje and you do not want to cross her. Okoye is the greatest warrior in Wakanda that doesn’t call themselves Black Panther.
She is more than just a bodyguard to the king. Okoye is deeply involved with the inner workings of the kingdom, she makes choices, her council is sought after, and T’Challa knows she is a trustworthy friend.
I can’t wait to see her and Widow on the same side in Infinity War. I think they could end up being close friends.
If I had to give a MVP of Black Panther is it Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister. She is not just a Princess of Wakanda, Shuri is the smartest person in the entire country. Share is the top scientists and innovator behind the new and improved Black Panther suits and technology. Her tech would make Tony Stark fall at her feet. I wonder if she helps him design his Prime Armor (talking MCU not comics)?
She is also ready to school T’Challa anytime, anywhere. Their relationship is built on love and sass, and it’s perfect. Plus I adore her because, based on the comics leading up to Infinity War, she fixes my darling Bucky’s mind. Forever grateful.
Nakia marches to the beat of her own Wakandan drum. Her battle prowess matches that of the Dora Milaje and she is a super spy. She feels a loyalty to T’Challa and her people but also feels like some of the older traditions need to change.
Nakia is fearless and willing to take risks to help those in need. She’s stubborn and that makes her not only great future Queen material (if she chooses that path), but also the ideal match to T’Challa.
Women need to see this movie. Your daughters (if old enough) need to see this movie. I left feeling like I could take on the world if I needed. It was empowering to see women not just serving as a love interest or damsel in distress but as warriors, leaders, and innovators. If you love watching Black Widow kick butt and take names, you’re going to LOVE the women of Wakanda.
I think Black Panther is important for children to see, especially girls, but parents should be informed going in. The film has a lot of hand-to-hand combat with weapons like spears (albeit very advanced spears). You will see someone with a spear head sticking out of their body and other wounds throughout.
Language: The S bomb is dropped 2x and it is very clear what is being said. Not like Sam in Winter Soldier when he says Shhhhii and it gets cut off/fight scene is happening around him.
Humor: The humor is less Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and more just fun banter.
If your child has watched other marvel films and you are okay with the fighting, then I say go for it.
Visually nothing like we have seen before in the MCU.
From the futuristic, awesomeness of the technology to the richness of the African countryside, Black Panther is stunning. The Ancestral Plane or as I call it The Lion King moment, is beautiful and serene. The costume designer looked to the whole continent of Africa and a variety of the people from the Maasai to the Suri for inspiration. The end results were designs steeped in African culture with fantastical elements befitting the mysterious country of Wakanda.
I could see Wakanda making it’s way to Animal Kingdom at Disney World. I’m so in for a Wakandan expansion!
2 Post Credit Scenes
Earlier in the film, T’Challa declares they will no longer turn their backs on the world. Fast forward to the first scene and we see T’Challa addressing the UN as the new King of Wakanda. He announces that Wakanda is willing to work together with other nations. Of course they think Wakanda is just a farming culture and can provide them with nothing. Hah. They will learn. All of this is foreshadowing to the fact that every nation, every tribe, will have to come together or Thanos will wipe them out.
The final stinger was one that made me so happy. It is also the one thing I was banking on seeing in this film. If you know me and know my Marvel tastes you can probably figure out what or whom was shown in this one. I squealed. No shame either, not even a little.
Long Live The King. Black Panther is in theaters February 16, 2018!
The all new Avengers Infinity War trailer is finally here! I’ve been watching the other one so much, if it was an old school VHS tape it would be worn completely out by now. This may just have been another tease, I’m hoping for another trailer showing before Black Panther, but it did give us some more insight into Infinity War. Lets breakdown the new Avengers Infinity War spot.
Deep breaths. Okay, lets talk about this. In just 30 seconds, we see some important things.
1. Tony Stark, Peter Parker, and Doctor Strange are looking at something, with a blueish glow. I’m thinking the Guardians, with Thor in tow, are here to help fight Thanos.
2. Scarlet Witch and Vision look like they are having an intimate moment, but she definitely seems concerned. Is she drawing out the mind stone’s power or trying to sense something in Vision?
3. Loki is staring at someone with extreme contempt and hatred. Ahem, Thanos.
4. Speaking of Spidey, he didn’t think that attacking the portal thing through. Thanos’ portal has taken to the sky and he seems unable to breathe. Maybe Tony saves him thanks to the tracker in his suit.
5. Cap and Black Widow are back in town with an injured Vision and Scarlet Witch. Sorry guys I don’t think that’s Captain Marvel walking being Cap. The fact that Vision is injured tells me that this is post fight with The Black Order. Cap and Widow likely jumped in and fought off The Black Order (the scene we see in the first trailer), to save Vision’s life. I don’t think Thanos would have left him alive.
6. “Get this man a shield.” Was my favorite part of the first Infinity War trailer and now we see Cap sporting his new Wakanda-style tech shields. I’m hoping he also gets his round shield back but these new ones look pretty sick. And there is comic book canon to back up his use of a different shield.
7. Iron Man in his Prime Armor. This armor has built-in nanotech that allows the suit to shape-shift at his will. The scales on the outside of the suit can shape themselves into weapons like cannons, guns, and so much more. Force field anyone?
Along with the new footage, fans were also treated to the 10th Anniversary Class Photo.
So much awesome in one picture.
The class photo features 79 actors and filmmakers from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don’t know about you but it gave me feels. This has been such a massive project and looking back over the 10 years, just wow!
Avengers Infinity War is in theaters May 4th 2018!
Why have an atrocious looking monster when you can have a villain that is intriguingly beautiful. This aesthetic makes your initial reaction to them not one of disgust but of curiosity. For example: Thanos? Yeah we hate the guy, no questions asked. Loki? Well that’s a different story, right? For this Marvel Mondays post, it is all about the villains, because evil things come in beautiful packages.
Because a Villain this handsome shouldn’t be locked in a cellar somewhere.
Each week to celebrate #MarvelMondays, my geeky friend, Jana of Whisky + Sunshine, and I will be bringing you fun Marvel posts leading up to the Infinity War premiere. Be sure to read her post Villain Hotties of the MCU. Join us on Twitter every Monday @ThatAshleyErin and @WhiskynSunshine!
He is the god of Mischief and of looking good in a suit. I don’t think it is even humanly possible to dislike Loki. Sure he’s tried to take over Midgard and all, but I don’t know. He could make me sit through math lessons all day and I wouldn’t even be mad.
This post isn’t just an appreciation for the males of the MCU. Our female villains are stunning too. Hela is a total bad*ss from the way she fights, talks, walks, and dresses. She had zero F’s to give. I mean, I was mad at her for Asgard, Thor’s eye, and all, but I kinda also liked her. A lot of conflicting emotions there. Next Halloween I think I’m going as Hela- ripped up black jeans, form fitting top, black wig, and killer smoky eye.
Darren Cross a.k.a. Yellow Jacket
Darren fits the whole, he looks like a good guy but don’t turn your back on him m.o. One might argue he is trying to outdo Loki in a suit, but sorry Darren, no one beats Loki in a suit. Except maybe Steve but this is a villains list.
After meeting Ego, we could definitely see where Peter got his good looks from. And if you have ever watched Captain Ron, you know he wasn’t rough on the eyes back in the day either. But then he turned out to be some insane celestial who slept with way too many um female species. So, yeah. Moving on.
Ronan The Accuser
We meet Ronan as he comes out of that liquid looking ripped and ready to go. Those piercing purple eyes, extreme contouring, he made blue look good. Unfortunately his new outfit didn’t come with dance skills. Maybe if the power stone hadn’t wiped him out, he would have at least learned the stanky leg.
Although I haven’t seen him in action yet (come back Wednesday for my full review), there is no denying he looks good while being so bad. And if he stays true to the comics, Erik is just as smart and as lethal as T’Challa. I don’t think this will be an easy fight for the new King of Wakanda.
Villain or Victim?
There are two so-called villains of the MCU who are as beautiful as their stories are tragic.
The Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes is not a villain. One more time for those in the cheap seats: Bucky is NOT a villain, he is a victim. Bucky is someone who was brainwashed, and his true self was held captive inside his brain all those years, watching the horrors happen and not being able to stop himself. In the comics, and as we see in Winter Soldier, every time Bucky’s programming would glitch he was wiped clean and they would start over.
According to Natasha in The Winter Soldier, Bucky had around two dozen missions over the last 50 years, but he was captured 70 years ago. That meant it took them 20 years to break him down and train him to be a ruthless killer. 20 YEARS of torture. Just try and wrap your head around that.
The heartache in his eyes when he snaps out of Winter Soldier programming and watching his fragile mind starts piecing things together tears me up every time. When Tony lashes out that he doesn’t remember his parents, he replies all too painfully, I remember them all. Bucky is constantly dealing with trying to find his place in the world and reliving horrific deeds. Not only those he did to others but the horror story that was his life with hydra.
Look at his face here, look at it when he said “I knew him.” You can see the tears in his eyes. He looks like a confused child, who is waking up from a nightmare and doesn’t know where he is or what is going on. All he knows is he is hurting and he just wants it to stop.
Like Bucky, Nebula is another victim of her circumstance. Anyone being raised in a home with Thanos as their dad is going to come out screwed up. She was forced to compete with Gamora to survive, and every time she lost, Thanos replaced a part of her with a cybernetic enhancement, to the point where she is now mostly machine.
We finally see her finally have a breakthrough when her and Gamora are fighting on Ego’s planet. Much like the fight with Steve and Bucky at the end of Winter Soldier, she comes to realizes Gamora isn’t her enemy. They have a shared life experience and by letting go of the hate she has, she loses an enemy and gains a sister.
Avengers Infinity War is in theaters May 4th, 2018!
Ant-Man made it onto my top 5 MCU movies list for so many reasons, one being I just love the characters in this movie. Scott, Hope, and Luis a.k.a. the best storyteller in the MCU. When Marvel Studios announced a sequel I was all about it. Then the waiting began, and finally, we have a look at the new film! Check out the Ant-Man and the Wasp teaser trailer! I. Cannot. Wait.
Me watching the trailer:
LUIS!! I hope he gets in on the narration again.
Wasp’s suit and Hope are bad*ss. She gets blasters and wings. Sorry Scott.
Hello Kitty! I wonder if that was the only thing he could find to throw at the guy chasing them? If I had to throw what is in my pocket it would end up being a giant Lightning McQueen. #ParentLife
The portable building? LOL If only it was that easy to pack my family for vacation!
Any trailer that also shows Steve and Bucky even though they aren’t in the movie makes me happy.
Last we heard of Scott Lang, he had been rescued by Captain America and Bucky from the floating prison Ross put him in. Now he is dealing with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a dad. As he struggles to rebalance his responsibilities as Ant-Man and life at home, Hope and Dr. Pym need him for an urgent mission. Scott must become Ant-Man again and learn to fight alongside the Wasp, who has some awesome tech in her suit. They need to work together to uncover secrets from the past.
