Oh hey there 2014. I could say something cliché like, can you believe it’s New Years Eve? But I won’t. I mean I am like woah it’s the end of a crazy year for me but I am looking forward to the New Year.

I don’t know about you but I am not the one who makes resolutions.  Every year I hear people say these are my resolutions or they make a list of goals. And more than likely they do not follow through. I think people think of resolutions as something that they should do because everyone else is, but without an actual plan it’s just words.

That is one reason I am excited to welcome back to my blog, Mamavation Monday/Mighty Mom Monday.  A weekly post about fitness and healthy living with other bloggers that I know. This will help me get and stay on track with my ongoing goals.

First order of business in 2014 is getting back on a consistent….I’ll say that again CONSISTENT gym schedule. Twice a week Zumba, and 3 days a week running. To help force me to run again, I am signing up for another Color Me Rad race. It was so much fun last time I did it that I cannot wait to do it again. Since I am so far off my running game, seriously I was doing 3 miles in under 30 mins ugh!, it looks like I will be restarting the Couch to 5K app for the race.

Nutritionally, I have been doing a lot better. Still buying organic, nongmo products and working on doing a makeover of my household products. It is a daunting task to think about how much stuff in your home is actually terrible, but slowly but surely I will make my home and life as green as possible. That’s to say without living in a BPA/BPS free bubble breathing filtered air.

Mighty Mom Monday- Down But Not Out

If coughing until your abs hurt counted as core exercise or cheering on your favorite football team to victory was cardio then this week would have been a success. Unfortunately, I don’t think they count and that means I didn’t have such a mighty week.

Thanks to this lovely laryngitis which turned into a head cold I was down for the week. But not completely out. I did managed to make it to the gym Monday night for Zumba, paid for it afterwards of course. At least I went. The rest of the week I just tried to breathe through my nose and not cough up a lung. Success rate: about 50% if I’m being forgiving. So yeah it’s been a rough week and I wanted to go for a run but wasn’t sure my lungs could stand it.

Ehh it happens. 

What’s a mighty mom to do? Shake it off and keep at it. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming… It’s a new week and although not 100% I’m better enough to get back to my regular workout schedule. I just wish it wasn’t so hard to force yourself back into a routine. I feel like that is some sort of conspiracy thought up by evil skinny people. It could happen. Anyways, yes it will be hard, it will suck, and I’m sure I will be sore.

Mamavation Monday: Stretching IS Important

Stretching. Is. Important.

Of course it is important who doesn’t know that? Can I just say, you can know something but not do it? That whole head knowledge vs heart knowledge and practice what you preach thing. So yes DUH I know that stretching is a must before and after every workout. But halfheartedly stretching while talking to your friends is not really accomplishing anything. And if you aren’t a teenager anymore your body probably needs to stretch so you don’t hurt yourself. Why yes I am speaking from experience.

Last Monday my favorite instructor taught a double Zumba class. He had asked if his regulars would be there for both hours and my friends were like YES! I was like um sure I guess… Not that I don’t love his class but it is hard. 2 hours of torture? But peer pressure can be a good thing. Short story long, we went, I didn’t really stretch, and now my hip muscle is sore. Like when I stand up from sitting for long periods of time ouch *limp limp*

Moral of the story: Stretch properly before working out. Or end up walking like an old woman when you’re only in your twenties.

In other fitness news: I will be at the gym tonight for Zumba (properly stretching before it starts!) and tonight on Mamavation TV we are chatting about indoor air quality. Mamavation Monday: Planks and More

Week 3 of the #TMPlanks challenge has started and it is getting hard! My tolerance for planks before this was 1 minute tops. Today I did 1.5! Might not sound like a huge increase but for me it is. Tomorrow is 2mins dun dun duuunnnnn. My only concern is when I hold a plank for longer than a minute it feels like my lower back is being pulled apart. I am holding the plank properly (my friend who is a physical therapist and body guru showed me how years ago) so I know that is not it. Any ideas? It hurts while holding the plank but afterwards it goes back to feeling normal. I just don’t want to screw up something in my back because that’s where I have chronic pain and issues anyways.

Get in on the challenge, if holding a 1minute plank is out of your league that’s ok! Just hold it as long as you can :)
